Wonderful historic luxury hotel in the heart of Hamburg, where also James Bond has stayed!

The hotel opened its doors on the 2nd of May 1909 and it is located conveniently between the Außenalster lake and the Hamburg Central Train Station, which is only 500 meters away.

2020 renovated hotel offers free Wi-Fi, a spa with indoor pool, a private cinema, restaurants and a bar. Each floor is inspired by a different colour. All rooms were renovated in 2012.

For Bond fans like us, the most memorable moments are of course from “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1997). The Atlantic Hamburg (earlier part of Kempinski chain) is 007’s (Pierce Brosnan) hotel where he stays in Hamburg. Exteriors shots were filmed in hotel itself, but interior shots of hotel room were made in Stoke Poges Golf Club in Stoke Park, where also the famous golf game between Bond (Sean Connery) and Auric Goldfinger (Gert Fröbe) in “Goldfinger” (1964) was filmed.

Bond’s room itself is a Presidential Suite, which is located directly under the famous Atlantic sign.

In “Tomorrow Never Dies” Bond escapes from his room’s balcony to the roof of Atlantic Hamburg. The ladder that leads to the roof were made for the film and are not there anymore.

Bond (Pierce Brosnan) climbs up the ladder to the roof in “Tomorrow Never Dies“. Nowadays there are no ladder.

Most parts of the thrilling car chase that happens in a garage of Atlantic Hamburg were shot in Brent Cross car park in London. Some parts were filmed in Hamburg in a top floor of Saturn parking lot, but not in Atlantic Hamburg. In the film Bond comes to the hotel at the corner of the Atlantic Hamburg. Villain Stamper (Götz Otto) observes when on the roof of Ibis hotel Hamburg Alster Centrum when Bond steps into the hotel.

Bond drives his BMW to the front of the hotel (small pic). Holzdamm street is actually one way street and turning to the direction where Bond is driving is forbidden!

PlayStation game “Tomorrow Never Dies” (1999) also features Atlantic Hamburg. At least the grand piano that can be found from the game is in the lobby of the hotel 🙂

The notable guests that have visited the hotel includes also Sir Sean Connery and Sir Roger Moore.

We enjoyed a lovely dinner at the hotel’s lounge bar as well as very enjoyable crème brûlée‘s at the hotel’s Atlantic Bar.

Thank you the crew of Atlantic Hamburg for inviting us to visit the hotel and a wonderful tour around the hotel!
