007 Travelogue: Weissensee (AUSTRIA) 2024
June 9, 2025 0 By 007 TravelersToday’s 007 travelogue focuses on the film “The Living Daylights” (1987) starring Timothy Dalton.

We set off in the morning from Kitzbühel and headed towards Lake Weissensee. The first Bond destination on the way was the Festungsberg tunnel, in front of which trucks have been parked to stop Bond. However, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage has some additional equipment installed by Q (Desmond Llewelyn) and Bond shoots the road open with missiles so that he and Kara Milovy (Maryam d’Abo) who accompanies him can get through the obstacle. The filming location Festungsberg tunnel is slightly north of Lake Weissensee.

The journey continued and the “Kreuzberg curve” was reached next. In the film there is only a brief moment when Bond drives through a curve.

From here we continued towards the place where Bond and Kara “travel” from the Czechoslovakian side to Austria on a cello. This filming location is called Tschabitscherhof.

After reaching the beautiful lake Weissensee we visited Chalet Zöhrer, in front of which a car chase between an Aston Martin and a Lada was filmed on the frozen lake. We also met Georg Zöhrer who witnessed the shooting of the film when he was nine years old, and his father. Many thanks to Georg for identifying some locations and for the nice chat we got to have with him.

We also visited the courtyard of the Nagglerhof Hotel, from where the Aston Martin V8 drove through the barn onto the frozen lake. In the summer the place looks a little different, but it was still very recognizable.

In addition we visited the Seehotel Enzian where Timothy Dalton, Maryam d’Abo and producer Albert R. Broccoli stayed during filming. Christine Cieslar was truly kind and showed us “behind the scenes” photos from when the movie was being filmed in Weissensee, telling us how friendly Broccoli was and how he loved the family dog so much that he sent a large amount of dog food from Los Angeles to Austria after filming!

To end the evening we headed to the Italian border to a place that the Italians call Passo di Pramollo and the Austrians call Nassfeld. This is where they filmed the rest of the ice chase in which the Aston Martin jumps back from the lake to land.

The next day our destination is Obertilliach along with the filming locations from the movie “SPECTRE”. Take a look at the next day here
