Our driving route from Palm Springs via Hoover dam to Las Vegas

Thursday 6th of July 2023

We had left the hot Palm Springs behind, and the only relief from the temperature was in our air-conditioned Nissan Maxima as outside temperatures remained in the 40+ degree range after reaching Boulder City and Hoover Dam, located on the Nevada-Arizona border on the Colorado River. The time difference between Nevada and Arizona is one hour. Construction of the dam began in 1931, and when completed in 1936, it was the largest dam built entirely of concrete in the United States. It is 221 meters high and 379 meters wide. At the gate the guard asked if we had any explosives with us, and after answering “no” we were allowed to drive into the area. We only left the car for a few minutes because the air was quite “burning hot” 🙂

In “Diamonds Are Forever” – there’s a scene shot at Hoover Dam when Wint (Bruce Glover) and Kidd (Putter Smith) drive Bond from Whyte House by car through a tunnel. In the video game “GoldenEye: Rogue Agent” (2004) the dam appears.

From the dam we headed towards Las Vegas, but on the way we stopped at Henderson where the Palm Boulder Highway Mortuary & Cemetery is located. Here the exterior shots were filmed when Bond (Sean Connery) arrives at “Slumber Inc” where his “brother’s” ashes are delivered, i.e. the smuggled diamonds in “Diamonds Are Forever” (1971).

Interior shots where Bond is knocked unconscious by Mr. Wint (Bruce Glover) and Mr. Kidd (Putter Smith) were filmed at the Palm Downtown Cemetery, located at 1325 N Main Street.

Finally, we arrived at the heart of the legendary Sin City, Las Vegas itself.

The evening activities consisted solely of checking into our hotel in Bellagio which has no direct Bond connection, but at the time of “Diamonds are Forever” – there was Hotel Dunes which served as the office of Whyte House casino manager Bert Saxby (Bruce Cabot) in the film. The Dunes sign can be seen in the film. The shot of the “Dome of the Sea” restaurant didn’t make it to the final film but can be found in the deleted scenes section of the DVD / BluRay, so the place is, in a way, the location of the film.

The Dunes Hotel & Country Club opened in 1955 and closed on January 23, 1993. Its north tower was blown up on October 27, 1993 and the south tower on July 20, 1994.

The Bellagio hotel opened on the same site in 1998. We checked in and appropriately got room number 28 007 on the top floor of our wing 🙂
