“He used to travel to Berlin and always stayed at the Hotel Adlon.”

John Pearson: “James Bond, the Authorized Biography of 007″

“As in Moscow, the traffic was sparse and after half an hour they pulled up outside the ruins of a building on Wilhelmstrasse, three storeys high, its brickwork scoured by bullet holes. To his surprise, Bond knew where he was. He had been to Berlin before the war and he had stayed at the Hotel Adlon, famous for its opulence, the first choice for Hollywood film stars and world politicians. Bond remembered the restaurants, the coffee houses, the smoking rooms, the barber’s shop with its black and white tiled floor and elaborate brass mouldings, the quartet playing Strauss in the great lobby with its marble columns and potted plants. The hotel had survived the war but there had been a fire in 1945 and this sad, forgotten ruin was all that remained. Was it even open for business? The driver had got out of the car and was urging him to move. Glad to be out of the rain, Bond followed him inside.”

Anthony Horowitz: “With a Mind to Kill” (2022)
