Max von Sydow (born Carl Adolf von Sydow; 10 April 1929, Lund, Sweden – 8 March 2020 Paris, France) was a Swedish actor who appeared in European and American films. Von Sydow featured in more than 100 films and TV series. His most memorable film roles include Knight Antonius Block in Ingmar Bergman‘s The Seventh Seal (1957), the earliest of 11 films he made with Bergman, which includes the iconic scenes in which his character plays chess with Death.

He was also known as e.g. The Emperor Ming in “Flash Gordon” (1980). Also Timothy Dalton was seen in the movie as Prince Barin. Von Sydow played the role of Lor San Tekka in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” in 2015, and he was Father Merrin in “The Exorcist” in 1973.

In the world of James Bond, the fans of 007 remember him as Ernst Stavro Blofeld in “Never Say Never Again” (1983), with Sean Connery as James Bond.

We wish his family the strength to bear the great sorrow.
