Thursday 17 July 2014

We woke up and were ready for breakfast. At this time we did not have it in hotel´s premises, we wanted to have our breakfast in three kilometers altitude.

We left our luggage to Hotel Alpenruh and we went to Cable car station Mürren.

Mürren station is the terminus of the Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen-Mürren, which consists of an aerial tramway and connecting narrow gauge railway, and connects Mürren to Lauterbrunnen.

A series of four cable cars, known as the Luftseilbahn Stechelberg-Mürren-Schilthorn (LSMS), provides transportation from Mürren downhill to Gimmelwald and Stechelberg, and uphill to the summit of the Schilthorn and the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria.

At the Cable car station of Mürren we had a meeting with Nicole Abegglen, who is Head of Sales of Schilthorn Cableway Ltd.

She had a new Tour guide with her, a Latvian lady, Zane Mousavi.

Thank you for co-operation:

Schilthorn Cableway Ltd. was founded 1962, and filming of “On Her Majesty´s Secret Service” (1969), (later “OHMSS” in this story), begun 6 years later. Piz Gloria´s revolving restaurant opened 1969 and it was extended 1988-1990. 007 Traveler´s wet dream Bond World 007 – Piz Gloria was opened 2013 and in the same year the construction of the new observation deck begun. Now it is ready and looks great! Something new came up this year 2014: Children playground FLOWER PARK Allmendhubel and BIRG SKYLINE WALK.

It was really nice to meet them, they told us about Schilthorn history, and took us to breakfast in 3 km altitude, to 360°-Restaurant Piz Gloria. There we had our breakfast.

Restaurant opening times: during operation time of the cable car

Breakfast Buffet: from 8.00 to 10.30
Hot meals: from 11.00 – 15.30
Small menus: from 10.00 to 17.00

In the restaurant there were famous stairs that were visible many times in “OHMSS” movie.

They also introduced the Bond World 007 – Piz Gloria to us, and our heads were spinning around of all that Bond stuff!

Nicole spent three hours with us and Zane the whole day. Zane took us to Bond lunch, and we had such a perfect day.

A panorama view in the eyes of 007 Travelers

We are very grateful to Nicole and Zane. Our little Agent Traveler sends her special thanks to Zane for taking care of her and for her company and special attention that she got from Zane.

Little Agent Traveler and Zane

We spent lots of money in Bond World 007´s Souvenir Top-Shop, as you can imagine! The Souvenir Top Shop with James Bond Bar complete this peak offering.

Platform outside of Schilthorn – Piz Gloria was originally built as a helicopter landing place and in “OHMSS” it also served a place where curling match with Bond disguised as a Sir Hilary Bray and Blofeld’s “Angels of Death” took place.

You can also have a lunch in 360°-Restaurant Piz Gloria restaurant. From the menu you can find for instance “007 Burger with French fries”, “SKY fall fillet of beef” or “James Bond spaghetti“. And the drink list contains of course “Martini Cocktail 007 with vodka or gin” and “Champagne Bollinger – Special Cuvée”. The dessert list includes ice-creams called “Coupe 007″ or “Coupe Diana Rigg”.

We saw an elevator that was also seen in “OHMSS” quite many times.

Then it was time to go back down. Time was three minutes to three and temperature was plus three degrees of Celsius.

When we went back down, Zane took us to Birg Cable Car station. Birg 2677 m (8783 ft.) and it is 1000 meters above Mürren. Birg is also a 007 location in “OHMSS” movie. There is a scene where Bond’s friend Campbell tries to find his way to Piz Gloria.

After saying goodbye to Zane, our little Agent Traveler said that she is going to miss her very much!

Later we went to say goodbye to Urs and Melanie Brotschi in Hotel Alpenruh, which is owned by Schilthorn Cableway Ltd, and to thank them for everything.

Mürren is a traditional Walser mountain village in Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, at an elevation of 1,650 m (5,413 ft.) above sea level and unreachable by public road. Tourism is popular through the summer and winter; the village features a view of the three towering mountains: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Mürren has a population of just 450, but has 2,000 hotel beds.

Mürren has its own school and two churches, one Reformed and one Roman Catholic.
Mürren is a car-free area, so we walked towards our next hotel. Urs was very kind and called them that we are coming and they sent the only vehicle which is allowed in Mürren:

They delivered our luggage to our next hotel:

Adrian Stähli, Hotel Manager

We met Hotel Manager Adrian Stähli and his wife Susanna. All the people of this hotel are very friendly and Happy, (see their video of them, it is great!) and entering this hotel is like a dream come true! Such a great view to Eiger Mountain, you can feel perfect peace of mind and relaxing. Adrian Stähli showed our room to us by himself personally.

Pictures below from our Superior Suite room

We got an invitation to hotel´s cocktail party at the terrace, outside of Tächi Bar, it was wonderful! In Tächi Bar you can find selected whiskies, sparkling champagne, hot chocolate, fine English teas and more.

During the filming of “OHMSS” there was a live orchestra evenings in Tächi-Bar and also DJ played records, so everyone could relax after filming in Hotel Eiger.

We met nice people and we were really honoured to meet Annelis Stähli – von Allmen, who is the former Manager of Hotel Eiger. She told us a great deal about filming 007 movie “OHMSS” and about George Lazenby.

We had dinner in hotel´s restaurant.

During filming of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service“, George Lazenby stayed at the Hotel Palace (Alpin Palace), which was the only four star hotel in the village at that time. Lazenby’s room number was 101. Producer Cubby Broccoli‘s room was 105. The majority of actors and actresses resided in Hotel Palace. Diana Rigg also stayed first in Palace, but later moved to Chalet “Am Rauft”.

1989 George Lazenby traveled again to Mürren and to Hotel Palace to celebrate an anniversary of “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service“.

When we visited Mürren, Hotel Palace was closed.

Within the village there is a large sports center with a 25 m swimming pool, sports hall, fitness room, café, information center and other facilities. There is a large skating rink which is sometimes used for curling competitions as well as a specific curling rink that in the summer is a tennis court. The ice rink is turned into a mini-golf course during the summer months. In the summer there are also tennis courts near to the sports chalet.

When we were in our evening walk, we saw also Hotel Edelweiss Mürren, where some of stuntmen and technicians stayed during filming of “OHMSS“. Also the parties that usually started from Hotel Eiger and it’s Tächi Bar, continued the whole night in Hotel Edelweiss.

Later we interviewed Adrian Stähli in Tächi Bar and asked questions about this hotel, James Bond and traveling, see the interview here.

Such a perfect hotel, for sure we want to visit again this paradise! Next time we will reserve the James Bond Suite. Pictures published with a permission of Adrian Stähli.
